Avila House │ Orinda, CA

Nestled among the peaceful streets of Orinda, this one-story house features the 1940's era detail; a classic wavy brick exterior on three sides and large front and back yards with a timeless front porch. The transformation from the old place to a new spacious, welcoming, and functional one involved intimate and careful planning together with the homeowners. Because of the changing trends of life/work balance and rising need for home-offices, giving the home owners an open plan with more natural light combined with smart storage solutions was key in this transformation. With large patio doors and floor to ceiling windows, living room has become a dynamic, light filled space during daytime and warm, comfortable environment during night time. Besides, large openings provided by sliding glass doors integrated the living space and garden which is one of the "must-haves" of Californian lifestyle with the year-round cooperation of weather. Lastly, designing the master bathroom with clean lines and lots of natural light from the ceiling which complement organic elements including stone, ceramic, and wood offers a break from modern distractions to reconnect with simple elements such as water and heat.
