Children's Room Design

The brief was to create a room that felt genuinely magical without feeling manufactured — a space a five-year-old girl would grow into and love, built from materials that were honest and safe. The ocean became the organizing theme, not as decoration but as a design language: curved forms, soft movement, the feeling of something alive and calm at the same time.

The bed was custom designed with an ocean-wave curved headboard and a rounded canopy — a place of refuge and imagination at once. A custom reading nook and built-in desk were scaled and positioned for independent use, following Montessori principles that encourage a child to navigate her own space with confidence. Every surface she would touch — the upholstery, the bedding, the curtains — was specified in natural linen and cotton. The furniture and flooring were made from solid natural wood. All paints and stains throughout the room are non-VOC, chosen with the same care as every other material decision.

The garden is visible from both the bedroom and the bathroom — a biophilic connection to the outside world that changes with the seasons and with the quality of light through the day. Natural pastel colors complement that view rather than compete with it, keeping the room calm enough to sleep in and alive enough to play in.

The result is a room that holds a child's world completely — rest, play, learning, and the daily rituals of growing up — in a space that feels genuinely beautiful rather than simply childish.
