Orinda Sanctuary —
A Primary Bathroom Redesigned for Serenity

A primary bathroom renovation in the heart of Lamorinda — Calacatta Gold marble, a layout shaped around natural light, and custom millwork designed to preserve every inch of the garden view.

The Brief

This Orinda home sits in the heart of Lamorinda — a neighborhood defined by its mature trees, hillside lots, and homeowners who value quality over trend. The primary bathroom had accumulated updates over the years, each one reasonable in isolation, but collectively working against the home's natural character.

The brief was about coherence: bringing the space into full alignment with the home's surroundings and with the rhythm of daily life — calm, considered, and unhurried.

The Design

The biophilic approach here went well beyond materials and light — it shaped the layout itself. The shower was positioned to receive the north-facing windows' diffused, consistent daylight. A custom curved glass shower enclosure was designed not only to maximize usable space but to echo the curved cabinetry throughout, creating a room that reads as a single composed whole.

The vanity was conceived as two curved faces rather than a single side-by-side unit — a decision made entirely to preserve the view. Both positions face the large windows, ceiling-hung mirrors on each side reflecting the garden rather than the wall. The result is a bathroom where the landscape is always present — not as decoration, but as the organizing principle of the room.

Calacatta Gold marble was chosen for its warmth and legibility — a stone that reads clearly without needing to announce itself. Graff fixtures in a warm finish complete a palette that feels resolved and enduring.

Key Materials
  • Calacatta Gold marble — floor, shower, and vanity surfaces
  • Custom curved glass shower enclosure
  • Custom curved two-face vanity — preserving full window view
  • Ceiling-hung mirrors — both vanity positions
  • Graff fixtures — warm finish throughout
  • Curved cabinetry — custom millwork to unify the room
The Outcome

A bathroom that belongs equally to the quiet end of the day and the beginning of it. The Calacatta Gold marble reads differently in morning light than in the evening — a quality that reveals itself slowly, over months of daily use.

Every element curves toward the same resolution. Nothing competes. The room simply settles.
